Open letter to Mrs Laura Bush

Appendixe 2:
Open letter Mrs Laura Bush

June 21, 2007
The Honorable Mrs Laura Bush
President's wife of the United States
Washington, DC
Dear Mrs. Laura Bush,
We are writing you because we are convinced that women situation in Congo is not acceptable and that we may soon face a HIV, illiterate, corruption and poverty threats more serious than any other country in the World.
The DRC population is estimated at 65,751,512 (Jul 2007 est) divided in 3 age groups:
0-14 years: 47.6% (male 15,718,614/female 15,557,058)
15-64 years: 49.9% (male 16,224,734/female 16,571,549)
65 years and over: 2.6% (male 680,313/female 999,244) (2007 est.)
1.1 million (est 2003) is the number of people living with HIV in DRC,
The DRC is among the 10th corrupted, vulnerable and poorest country in the world despite its rich natural resources as explained in the book.
With a total of 33,127,851 female in the country only 55.1% (2003 est.) of them can read, write French, lingala,Swahili, kikongo and Tshiluba. Most of them are trained for domestic jobs and often don't have the skills and qualifications while they need a job and the majority are jobless.
It is estimated that more than 4 millions Congolese died due to the wars in 1997 until the 2003 a transactional government was set up but the most vulnerable, victims of these natural resources conflicts are women and children up to now. It is important to highlight that among the 1.1 million HIV infected among them women were infected and raped during the conflicts.
We believe that your position will support us to give some recommendations in order to improve women situation in DRC and fight against illiteracy, HIV and corruption in the country
After the analysis of the key findings, it come to our attention to promote women voice in the Congolese government as we never had a women as a Prime Minister or President of the country as their opinions can be a great step towards making gender discrimination history since the independence in 1960 up to now. By fighting gender discrimination, literacy level of women in the country will increase and this will give them access to good jobs such as lawyers, managers, police officers, engineers, professors, doctors...instead of the previous occupation that limited them to only domestics duties.
Justice need to be done on the women raped during the wars specially the one infected by HIV. By this we mean open an investigation committee in DRC in order to punish the criminals that raped, killed and infected HIV to vulnerable women and children...
The last recommendation will be to open a international committee to fight corruption in DRC specially.
Although we are fully aware of the dangers and difficulties in implementing these recommendations, we believe the dangers of failing to do so are far greater. We believe in your authority to make these recommendations to be reality and we're thankful for your initiatives to promote women voice across the world.
We urge you to act decisively. If you act now to end the threat of women poverty and discrimination in DRC, you will be acting in the most fundamental international goals to make poverty history and promote equal opportunity in the DRC and in the rest of the World..
Sincerely

Make 5 millions history

Appendixe 1:

Make 5 millions history
He said they're afraid
He said let them die, suffer and kill each other
They're responsible for their actions
They should live in poverty and mourn everyday

Another came and shouted more than 4 millions died
More women are raped and children pay the price for the previous generation
Now parents bury children while before they expected the contrary

How many more will suffer and die
O HIV, poverty, diseases where do u come from?
O jealousy, division and fear where do u come from?

Stop dreaming millions of dollar
Stop dreaming abundant life while you speak but not practice
Stop hating each other while our babies died and women raped
We're all losers until fear become our enemy

You all wana lead, you all wana give orders
You all wana criticise, you all wana enjoy a prosperous life
You all wana kill each other for money
You all hate the country, you don't love each other

She said you speak what you don't practice
Distracted while darkness is reigning in your towns and cities
Babies cry because they don't drink or eat
Women mourn because their voices are not heard

Who is the man? Who will serve the nation?
Who will make these voices heard?
More than 4 millions died, let them rest in peace
Dead smiling is an honour
Because the next generations will be safe, fit, protected and proud of the UN, G8, EU and the rest of the World for what they have done for Congo

How to build a lasting peace in the DRC

McDowell and Beliles (1995, p3-17) recognize that the world is changing rapidly today. Nations are crying out for freedom and are looking for ways to bring prosperity to their lands among these nations, the research has proven that a country with rich natural resources potentialities to be the 8th poorest economy in the World. The problems facing this nation are complex: individuals, families, and businesses.
The secondary research plus the recommendations given by individuals in Bukavu and the eastern Congo found that there are principles to be applied in order to obtain freedom, prosperity and peace.
It was noted in priority that the change of mentality, a strong leadership and good governance in all the regions of DRC to be the foundation of solutions.
The 2 authors state that for a nation or society to stand under pressure it must have a strong foundation because these pressures facing the nation are so great that they will quickly collapse.
The foundation is formed by principles to support a free, just, prosperous and long lasting nation. They say that if people have to change mentality, they've conscious of that need to obtain a proper foundation in character and thought, the change should start internally.
The DRC government is not totally responsible of all the issues in the society; the truth is that Congolese don't depend on government than government depending on Congolese because if men are good, the government cannot be bad.
Speaking of self government as principle, we meant the heart of a man with the ability to govern his conscience, will, character, thoughts, ideas, motives, conviction, attitudes and desires.
The way an individual govern himself internally affects his external actions, speech, conduct, and use of property.
The type of government that exists in the homes, churches, schools, businesses and associations is a reflection of self-government within the citizens.
A proverb was used here to conclude this part: “you must rule yourself before you can rule others.''
The second principle was: ''union''
The interviews analysis shows that Congolese are not united. If people of a nation work voluntarily in union for the common good of the entire nation, the people will be free, they will have to share common beliefs, purposes, ideas, and faith.
The 3rd principle was: individuality
It reveals that each person is unique and distinct. Each has unique talents, abilities which fit him for a special purpose. Every person is responsible and accountable for his own choices and actions.
Reading why Congo is not in peace, you note that individuals do not play their role but only accuse the government of all responsibility.
McDowell and Beliles (1995, p10) say that man is of highest value and the state exists to serve man rather than man serve the state. The individual is superior to the state.
In a government, individual's lives, liberty and property will be in danger if they don't cooperate or contribute to the state. So Congolese as individuals has to cooperate and contribute to the state.
The 4th principle is: conscience considered as a property. It was defined that conscience is an internal property within thoughts, opinions, talents, ideas, mind, affections, and conscience to be protected by the government.
The responsibility of DRC leaders is to protect these internal properties before protection external property which are land/estate, money, freedom of speech, bodily health possessions, freedom of Assembly but if nothing is done to secure the conscience of individual, there is a danger for example for people to be corrupted, unconscious and extremist. Further more it was recommended to take action to prohibit government or other citizens from taking anyone's personal property without their consent or from violating anyone's conscience and right.

The 5th principle was education:
An ignorant people will quickly become a people enslaved. Only a well-instructed citizenry can be permanently free said McDowell and Beliles (1995, p12) .They explain that education is a sowing and reaping process. The idea is to sow in people to grow over the years and produce fruit to be manifested in every aspect of life; personal, social, political and economic. They suggest that the philosophy of the schools in one generation will be the philosophy of government in the next.
Education is the means for propagating a governmental philosophy.
Education is more than acquiring knowledge and learning facts; it's of greater importance in morals and principles.
If a nation desires to be free and prosperous, people need to apply principles into their daily lives. For example they can apply honesty, loyalty, concern for others and diligence as principles
The 6th principle is morality: if the DRC continue to loose principles and manners as the interviews reveal, it's a threat to people who want to live in peace because no nation can long endure without virtue or morality in the people.
The 7th principle is the Faith in God; here we link it with morality because religion cannot be separated with morality. Man's most precious possession, his conscience responds to right or wrong put in his heart.
The primary research and secondary data agree that every nation is based upon some religion. The form of a free government, free economy can only come forth and be maintained by a people that have the proper power or spirit within them without this foundation, a free government can never be established or maintained.

To conclude we defined the word peace as being free to choose what is good for an individual to be happy and stable continuously. If the contrary happen in the life of a human being, then it creates a situation where this person will fight to make sure this right is accepted.
Peace builds itself gradually from inside of a person to outside. If you're not happy or at peace within your heart, it is difficult to be at peace with people around you. The people around you can be your spouse, your children, your family, your friends, your community, your leaders, your country or nation.
One of the first steps to peace is looking at the individual side first:
When someone is well educated and by this I mean intelligence plus character, this person will understand why he or she has to love the neighbor and respect his or her properties and his or her rights.
If there is a change of mentality within Congolese for example, to understand that what Mr. Mobutu used to say: ''Volez mais volez un peu.” This means steal, but just a little bit. It was bad and encouraged dirty money from the population causing fiscal fraud. Then we are moving toward the peace process.
The conversion of mentality is one of the first think for example today in the DRC that Congolese will need in order to move to another step.
Understanding that there are problems and these problems need solutions instead of sinking in the water can be a best option as a start.
The conversion of mentality here means understanding that there are communal share or property, private property then love of the nation explained early as patriotism or being patriot. If everyone on his level from student, priest, pastor, doctor, and politician, understands why it's so crucial to love the nation, the following stage will be a success.
Among the problems salaries to the population was the basic foundation toward peace because if the army and the population have fair wages this will decrease corruption, betrayals, poverty of spirit and mind. The State should understand why it's crucial to take its responsibility as a contribution toward peace for example the primary research shows that if the State decreases its multiples taxes from multiples state services this will allow the State treasure to save money because more taxes plus more services with low salaries encourage fraud. A solution would be to gather all these services together reducing state costs of all these employees managed by only one service and by doing so fraud risk will be minimal.
When the mentality changes, there will be a need to have harmony in the Congolese families to avoid aggressors to take charge. This means when the children are happy of their parents it's difficult to cooperate with them against their own family or parents.
The fair salaries will help people to enjoy their lives, have dignity by the conversion of mentality which will make Congolese proud of their nation.
The conversion of mentality will fight the mentality of “nulage” as in French the proverb says, “si quelqu'un d'entre vous commence a emerger on lui tire pour le rabaisser afin de regagner le meme niveau que ses freres.'' This expression shows that most of the time when a brother start a career shining instead of promoting him you do your best for him to fail then all of you will be on the same level. In other word people are always jealous when one of their brothers is getting his promotion in every aspect of his life (finance, marriage and social life). If this conversion of mentality will understand why Congolese should be promoted to go forward and be the best of the best where they are, it's will be the foundation of love, unity and peace in the DRC.
Dr Mumba, Jr. (2003, p18-23) was saying in one of his book that change is a change until you change. This means until the individual, the Congolese community and the Congolese state change completely then we will talk about change or process to have long term peace.
Let describe first what the individual means on this issue:
Congolese as individual need to understand their role within their nation and should restore their human values for example tolerance, solidarity, love of work and effort, patience, then the community should create harmony between Congolese and their neighbors, the community should encourage team work, supporting each others when problems occur and when people are happy, have compassion of the most vulnerable such as widows/orphans/woman, children and by doing so the state also need to have a reform or a change on deep level as possible.
The State should reduce multiples taxes services creating confusion to the investors and the population who are not encouraged to invest their money to reduce poverty and increase jobs. If the State can make sure that the right people are selected to do the right job and monitor continuously their training and performance, the fight against corruption, the fight against fraud for example will succeed.
When people have fair salaries, the army will make sure the population is safe and will live in security because they are well paid, well disciplined. If the people are satisfied the State authority will be felt everywhere in the country not only in some of the regions. By doing so the education, the health care, the housing, the security, the justice of the population will be look at constructively.

Referred to DGCI (1999, p37) in order to restore peace political leaders in a conflict region should:
- Restore security and justice in the State
- Disarm the population; ex-rebels and ex-soldiers
- Integrate ex-rebels and ex-soldiers in the country economically.
- Welcome child soldiers and adapt them to a civilian life
- Check if any bombs or mines were installed in the roads, factories and farms;
- Help refugees, dispersed population to be integrated and installed.
- Help orphans, homeless, jobless and victims of the war
- Build hospitals and health care system
- Build Schools and education system
- Promote the economy
- Reconciliation with the ex-enemies
- Train, encourage the population to participate in the political life
- All criminals should be punished
- Call for international cooperation as the DGCI (1999, p40) continue
- Put in emergency all help on development projects
- Respect peace agreement
- Accept the government in power
- Strict respect of individuals, citizens rights on political process
- Unity and reconciliation of the population divided by war
- Children should be prioritized in the peace process because they're the future.

Education will be the base of the peace when they are adults.

Tribalism / discrimination:

Tribalism / discrimination:

I will start this chapter by a story of a mother who went to the farm looking for food in order for her child to eat. In the village people were screaming and shouting that a neighbor's house was burning. Unfortunately a child was in that house. This mother curious wanted to know what was going on and find out that the house was hers and her daughter was inside, so she decided to save this child and accepted to get into fire. Fortunately she saved the child but on her way back to the safe place she realized that her face was burnt and had to take medical treatment in order to survive. She was safe but the face destroyed by the fire.

After many years, her daughter was on the age when men wanted to marry her and every times they come to visit her she had to tell her mother to hide because her face was not presentable. One day her mother stressed of that attitude she decided to tell her the truth when one of this girl friend came to pay her a visit as usual, she asked her mother to hide as usual but this time she decided to tell the truth to the girl. Here is the conversation:

Mother: my dear daughter do you know why my face is like this?
Daughter: No, replied the girl in rash to welcome her friend.
Mother: Well, my darling, there was a fire in the village and I realized that my house was burning and my only and lovely daughter was inside so I decided to save my child.
Fortunately my child was safe but on my way out my face was burnt.
Daughter: oh my God...mother I don't know what to say... (to be continued)

Life is full of surprises, sometimes even the one you love so much can deceive you but remember there is a proverb that says: I might be too short to cut the fruits of a tree but when I remember that another fellow can jump on my shoulder even though this tree was too high we will reach it because we will have stairs.

If one person can solve a dozen of problems in a fixed time what if there were two? With one head you can build a house but with two heads you can build a building or a palace the old proverbs taught.
The problem discussed in this section ignore those proverbs cited earlier that why it's so necessary to remind our readers that one of the virus affecting this country not to prosper and to be among the most vulnerable country in the World is Tribalism and discrimination.
The word discrimination is defined as not giving a fair treatment to someone because of his tribe, religion, sex, and/or color. Tribalism is giving priority only to your own tribe at work, at school, friends... ignoring the equal opportunities policies.
While interviewing one of the participants told me a story explaining division among Congolese. He said:
''The story begins some time ago in 1884 where Europeans decided to share Africa and among them a place called actual Congo was given to a king called Leopold 2 as his private property. From 1885 up to 1908, Leopold 2 was the ruler of this place owning everything from the natural resources, the human resources and he could decide whatever he wanted whether for good or for bad over his properties. In 1908 pressures from journalists in Europe challenging and confronting violent crimes against humanity happening in the E.I.C (Etat Independent du Congo owned by Leopold 2) at that time the king decided to give his own property to his country Belgium which did positive actions such as introduction of education programs,
the building of roads, construction of houses, construction of schools, construction of hospitals and more, can be found in the book IS THE DRC POOR?
The second face of the Belgian in Congo was really negative and among them the application of a policy called 'diviser pour mieux regner' this means divide to rule perfectely..
In this order Congolese was divided. Congo DRC has different tribes approximately more than 400 for example people from Katanga are called Katangais, from Kasai are called Kassaien, from Kivu (Maniema, South-Kivu and North-Kivu) Kivussiens, within Bashi, Balega are sometimes called Barega and Bamaniema and so forth. The analysis of the primary research shows that some tribes were shown to be most powerful and most important than others. In the tribes they were categories: lazy tribes, inferior tribes, superior tribes, intelligent tribes, rich tribes, builder tribe (Bashi), farmer tribe(Maniema) and hunter tribe (Lega).
And this created a situation of tribe classification. By this I mean some tribes could only cooperate with people on their level or same tribe. The case is observed today even when Congolese want to get married this aspect is the most important for parents who insist and oblige their children to get married to the people of their tribes. In business, lots of affairs don't prosper because the manager, partners in a company would like to work with people from his own tribe even if they are weak and not qualified to do the job.

LES NOIRS NE LISENT PAS

Poor education:

One of the interviewees in Bukavu said, in a very provocative opinion:

''It's crucial now to sell Congo DRC at any price and share the money between the 65 millions estimated population because most of people in Congo would like to live outside the country so the money will allow everyone to choose where to go since only few minority of people are enjoying all the wealth of this rich state in natural resources. We don't see the advantage of being Congolese.'' She added.

From this point of view I would like to introduce some of the complex matters that this nation is facing. Mc Dowell and Beliles (1995,p3-18) highlighted that in order for a country to be free and live a peaceful life there are principles that need to be applied into the lives of the citizens of a nation, desiring to be free, just and prosperous. It's in the homes, educational institutions, churches and media outlets where these laws will have an impact and change a desperate situation.
These ideas from American authors give value to population teachings. Their statements approve that if a nation is well taught and apply the principles or rules learnt the nation will get out of ignorance and will live in freedom, in justice and in prosperity.
Among the problems cited from this work participants “education” was proven to be contributing to this country failure to reach peace. After analysis another term was used describing bad behaviors, unconsciousness, facility behaviors brief they called it ''Congolese mentality'' all these because the nation is not well taught, not well educated and apply wrong principles affecting the peace journey in the state.
The primary research pointed that issue as poor education.
The problem starts on a very primitive age in the primary school where underage children are taught to bribe in order to pass classes, exams. The teachers not well paid consider it as extra money and a right but this system goes further from primary school to secondary school and even at universities. Both sides (graduates and professors) find the system normal but will start complaining when financial scandals are noticed in large companies. They complain when businesses ignore the law implanted by the state authority. They complain when states taxes are increasing everyday but do not know the importance of that money to develop the country, they complain when people abuse each other at work without any justice to punish them.
At the end everybody is accusing everyone because no one knows what's right and what's wrong. So our participants justify their arguments that the education system needs a reform to prevent worst cases in the society.
Another source from the internet completed this statement saying that black people are not developed because of some of these reasons. The article translated from French will give you a clear view of where the problems come from.

This “white author” on the link above, explained the reasons for black people including the Congo not to prosper; not to be developed. Even though I don't agree totally because not all blacks are not informed, not all blacks are divided, not all of blacks are uneducated or don't have saving skills, but some of the arguments provided prove a certain reality to help the community to be participant of the World development. Here are the reasons translated from French version:
a). Ignorance:
To ignore something or someone is not paying attention to that thing or that person. Lots of information, knowledge, skills from written books sounds to be secrets. This information are kept in libraries, internet news, e-books, journals, magazines, but not visited by black people.
Most of data on mining industry, oil/petrol industry, music industry, food industry, technology/retail industry, business principles, political principles, history, geography and more are available everywhere (shops, internet, magazines, university and libraries), but the only thing needed is just to read and learn new skills/opportunities to improve life standard.
The majority of “blacks'' would like to be rich without any effort, they end up in prisons for different crimes related to the easy money they want to earn.
Another factor is that they don't want to study and end up illiterate that why they can't read or adapt to new trainings.
If the statement made earlier apply to Congolese, how many professional leaders get continuous training? How is the learning, research, development, innovation projects funded and if so how are these projects effectiveness managed?
Based on the information provided by the primary research the education system in DRC needs to be updated. The population needs to be encouraged to read and learn new skills for example.
The next issue highlighted by this author is:

b).Selfishness: this word explain how a person can love himself so much and doesn't care about what others think, have or gets. In other words, the person would like to receive more than giving. It is true that different concepts and opinions can be discussed here supporting or confronting this behavior. In this context, the author would like to explain how Africa can be so rich in natural resources but still a few minority of people are enjoying the wealth while the other majority live in extreme poverty.
This is the case of the DRC where almost the majority of the population suffers so much starting with the basic needs which are food, health care, homelessness, education, fair salaries or minimum wage...

The 3rd reason comes from the heart. McDowell and Bellies (1995, p6) justify it by saying that what's come outside started inside the heart even actions of the person.
c). Envy: Most of black people would like very expensive cars, very expensive houses and holidays, which is not bad if the conditions/wise decisions support actions taken.
To be rich has conditions, for example it was noted that rich individual work hard sometimes 15 to 16 hours a day, don't spend money without a budget, read a lot, attend conferences to improve their weaknesses, use their time effectively and give money a great value, exercise to be fit, etc. The primary research from the interviews in Bukavu revealed that Congolese in average are lazy, disorganized, jealous, poor, arrogant, and not serious and can do anything to stop another Congolese to reach promotional level due to tribalism/discrimination and other elements to be discussed in the next sub chapters. Here it is important to say that working hard does not mean effective, efficient production. You may work hard but produce very little while another one can work few hours but produce more.
A clear example is when fishermen x spend all night fishing a quantity of fishes estimated at 10 or 20 US dollars the next morning while another investor can use fishing boats, fishing machineries and produce a large quantity of fishes estimated at 20 or 30 times more than the first one.
If the x envies the y production than you understand that the problem started when he or she decided to work hard but due to ignorance he never knew that someone else could invest and use an effective technique. So envy is among the problem to the durable peace in the state because every times a Congolese want to shine, he/she is fought by his own brothers and sisters not to prosper and not to reach his or her breakthrough.

Widespread poverty:

Widespread poverty:

The financial aspect is very important to satisfy individual needs ( civilian, military, politician or normal citizen) however in the DRC one of the barriers of this state prosperity, peace process is because people are poor. Most of soldiers and civilians don't have salaries and in order to satisfy their needs some have to cheat, have to steal, have to encourage corruption, injustice, irresponsibly and in some cases have to kill to have money. This money helps them to pay school fees of their children, provide food for their families, pay health care, helps family members, build houses, buy expensive cars, open new businesses, and create wars to exploit illegally the natural resources of this poor population.

These actions affect even the education system which is also weak because the majority of teachers are corrupted encouraging students to pass when they fail to succeed exams but pass if they bribe the professor or teacher, this will be proven in future where strategic position such as doctors, lawyers, managers, generals, mps, officers are given to the wrong people at the wrong place and at the wrong time. This phenomena will create an atmosphere where the Congolese society face organisational, division, corruption, selfishness, discrimination, serious management matters in most of institutions/companies as criticized by most of data in the world.

The truth is when a society does not have fair salaries, powerful individuals or rich individuals exploit at the maximum the other working class or low class without any mercy and don't have any concerns about their health, long term effects to the environment where they live in and that is why you will find jealousy, division, discrimination within the Congolese environment. Remember Laurent-Desire Kabila used to say: you should be ashamed to be rich among the poor in Nashi (2007,p56-57) .

The research shows that everyone is so concerned about how to make money no matter what the consequences including any ethical issues that why some businessmen sell expired products willingly to the society and make a lot of money causing people to be sick and unhealthy even when they are caught the justice system doesn't do anything about it. To summarize these views, finance or salary is among the first problem to be look at because without salaries the country cannot be developed and live peacefully. The direct effect is on physical needs, emotional needs, and the society's self esteem, mentally that is the reason why the population behaves the way it behaves.

The author introduction

This book is titled How To Build a Lasting Peace in the Democartic Republic of the Congo (here after referred to as the “DRC”). This title will raise many questions, such as: what are the causes of this country not to be in peace? Does the DRC government or the international community aware of this country importance in the World, the consequences if there is no peace in this region of Central Africa? What are the recommendations in order to sustain long term peace in this country?

The researcher consider entitling this book, Peace in DRC which state the objective of this work. However such title would have raised many questions included: who is the author of this country's curse, cross, crisis? If so, what are the words curse, cross, crisis means to the DRC? Another factor is that peace is a process that will be obtained gradually that why how to build a lasting peace in the DRC as a title summarise the aim of all primary research done supporting the recommendations. The questions cited earlier and much more are answered in this book even through some will not agree that the recommendations given will have an impact however lots of realities are explained if this black nation in the Center of Africa need a change and support for a lasting peace to be built for good.

There are certainly authors who wrote about this subject before, this book used a French proverb to complete its suggestions:'' la politique dirige le monde mais l'economie dirige la politique'' this means politics lead the World but the economy rules politics.
In this research the economy, social issues were the base of our discussions with the 250 interview participants. The suggestions given were discussed on these importants theories discussed by McDowell and Beliles (1995,p4-5) :
1. Self-government
2. Union
3. Individuality
4. Conscience or property
5. Education
6. Morality
7. Religion or faith in God and his Word.
Some references will come from another book written by the same author called: Is the DRC poor? to enhance the complementarities of the researcher works with lots of similarities found on poverty causes, Congo importance in the World, its natural resources, consequences, make 5 millions history, the 4 open letters respectively to Honorable Mrs Laura Bush,Oprah Winfrey , the Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and Sen Barack Obama to complete some of the reasons cited by the interview participants for this country poverty and check the appendixe 1,2,3,4 attached.
These 2 books complement each other because the first one promote this country economy, recommend good international diplomacy, fight against poverty and the actual work aim is to establish long term peace in the total space of the country in particular also in Central Africa in general..
The author is aware of the difficulties to implement actions recommended to sustain long term peace however nothing is impossible if the will of every individual wish the same purpose of the writer.

How to Build a lasting peace in the DRC

FOREWORD:
Man is a social being. As such he is deeply concerned with the establishment of positive relationships with his fellow human beings so that he can consequently live in harmony with them. There is a simple name for this state of affairs: PEACE.
Unfortunately, human history is records the many instances of division, violence, and war which signify the breakdown of peace. Paradoxically, man is his own worst enemy in these instances. The recent history of the Congo, today called the Democratic Republic of the Congo or DRC, since independence provides an ample illustration of this. Independence was immediately followed by period of instability and political violence. This was followed by the rebellion led by Pierre Mulele which in turn ushered in the long dictatorial reign of Mobutu.
If peace is only the absence of war, Mobutu's regime could be called the golden age of peace, but peace is more than the absence of war. Mobutu's tyranny and corruption which worsened the poverty stricken misery of the population deprived of human rights created the conditions which led tow two civil wars in 1996 and 1998. Over five million Congolese have perished in just these two conflicts to date. So, since independence the DRC has never really known peace.
How to build a lasting peace in the DRC? What are the benefits of a lasting and real peace in a country?
In this book the author suggests key issues to be analyzed and resolved as conditions precedent to a permanent peace in any country, not only the DRC. He analyzes the concepts of peace, tolerance, forgiveness, leadership, partnership and discipline as factors in building peace and in light of existing conditions in the DRC. He concludes his analysis with topical suggestions about constructing the foundation of all peace by changing the hearts of Men.
To sustain a lasting peace in the DRC, this change must be accomplished and a culture of peaceful civilization erected. This is the way to win the peace for all the citizens of the DRC. The peace will be reflected in social harmony; justice and security for the population in their homes and lives; increasing levels of economy security, health care, employment, housing, and education for all; and, progress towards the eradication of poverty, disease and malnutrition.
This book is reflects the conclusions of the author from his research on all these issues and their relationships to building and sustaining peace in the DRC.
